What to Expect at Your First Breakthrough Session

What to Expect at Your First Breakthrough Session

There's a particular kind of hesitation that comes before booking with someone new — especially when you've already tried a few things and you're not sure this will be any different.  Not knowing what actually happens once you show up is part of what makes that hesitation stick around longer than it needs to.  So here's the whole thing, start to finish, no surprises held back for later.

Before You Book: If You're Not Sure I'm the Right Fit

You don't need to know for certain that this is the right approach before you reach out.  If you're weighing whether a Breakthrough Session makes sense for what you're dealing with, the simplest thing to do is email or call and ask.  I read those messages personally, and I'd rather answer a genuine question up front than have you book a session you're unsure about.  There's no formal consultation step between "thinking about it" and booking — just a real answer to a real question, whenever you're ready to ask it.

Booking: Setting Up Your Account

Once you're ready to book, you'll create an account through Jane, the practice management software the clinic runs on.  This is the same place you'll come back to every time after — to book or reschedule future appointments, look up past invoices, and access any resources or handouts I send your way between visits.  It takes a few minutes to set up, and after that, managing your appointments becomes about as simple as it gets.

Booking does require a credit card on file — this holds your appointment and protects the time set aside for you, but you won't be charged in advance.  You'll pay for each session as usual when you're here.  On the insurance side, the clinic doesn't bill your provider directly; you'll receive a receipt for Registered Massage Therapy services after each visit to submit yourself, the same way you likely have with other practitioners.

Before Your First Visit: The Intake Form and Policies

After your first appointment is booked, you'll receive an online health intake form.  You're welcome to fill it out ahead of time from home, or leave it for when you arrive and we'll go through it together — whichever is easier for you.  Either way works, and neither one is the "right" way to do it.

You'll also be asked to review and sign off on a few policy statements before your first session — things like the cancellation policy and expectations around the treatment relationship.  It's a five-minute read, and it exists so that both of us are on the same page before we ever meet in person.

What to Wear, and Finding the Clinic

Sessions are mat-based and fully clothed, so comfortable clothing that allows for free movement — think what you'd wear to yoga or the gym — works best.  If a mobility issue would make getting on and off a mat too difficult, let me know ahead of time.  I can adjust the setup for your session, including using a portable massage table instead, but I need advance notice to have that ready for you.

The treatment room is located inside CT Fitness.  There's a small number of designated parking spots directly in front of and behind the unit, and otherwise there is free open parking along the outside of the property.

The Day of Your First Appointment

If your intake form wasn't completed ahead of time, we'll finish it together when you arrive — no pressure, no judgment if life got in the way and you didn't get to it beforehand.  From there, we'll talk through what you've shared, particularly anything relevant to making sure your treatment is both safe and effective for your specific situation.

Then we get into the part that actually matters most: your story.  Not a generic checklist, but a real conversation — what's brought you in, where the pain actually is, how you'd rate it on a scale that means something to you, how long it's been going on, and what you've already tried.  Physio that helped for a while and then didn't.  A chiropractor you've seen for years.  A cortisone injection, an acupuncture course, months of stretching on your own.  All of it matters, because it tells me exactly which layers of the problem have already been addressed — and which ones haven't been touched yet.

This part isn't rushed, and it isn't padded out for the sake of it either.  I spend as much time as I actually need to get a clear picture of where you're at and how I can help — enough that you feel heard, and enough that I have what I need to build a real plan.  Not more than that, and not less.

From there, we review what we've found together and talk through what a treatment plan for that day could look like.  This isn't something decided for you in the background.  Once we've talked through the plan and you're comfortable with it, we get your consent, and the first hands-on treatment of your Breakthrough Session begins.

What Makes This Feel Different

If you've been through intake before at a physio or chiro clinic, some of this will feel familiar.  If you've been for massage therapy elsewhere, you may not have experienced much of an intake at all.  What's different is the amount of time built in for it — enough to actually understand what's been happening in your body over months or years, not just what hurts today.  That's the part that's easy to skip when appointments are shorter, and it's usually the part that ends up mattering most.

By the time treatment actually starts, you're not a stranger explaining your pain from scratch to someone who's already reaching for a generic approach.  You're a known story, with a plan built around it specifically.

The Next Step

If you've been putting off booking because you weren't sure what the first visit would actually involve, hopefully this fills in the gaps.  If you still have questions before you book, reach out directly — I'm happy to answer them.  Book a Breakthrough Session when you're ready, or get in touch first if you'd rather ask something specific.
